RETROFIT TURBINE-TOWER PADS TO PREVENT BURROWING BY SMALL ANIMALS. Small mammals often burrow under the concrete pads of the wind turbines and the junction boxes (figure 12) It might be helpful to apply gravel to the perimeters of these concrete pads as a means to discourage such under-burrowing. Also, it might help to apply fill to pads when gaps form under them due to long-term burrowing or other forms of erosion. A more practical solution to this problem in the long-term is to rely on wind towers that do not require concrete pads. If possible, perhaps new wind turbines could be installed without concrete pads (Smallwood et al 2004).
